On February 20th Very Edible Gardens (or VEG) was launched - a collaborative project between four keen Melbourne permablitzers. VEG is focused on helping Melbourne's transition towards sustainability, which includes edibility, and hence more people growing food where they live. In addition to supporting Permablitz's voluntary work, VEG plans to provide meaningful employment for people keen to gain skills in urban permaculture design, implementation and maintenance.
We've had some exciting news from Kim and Clive, Melbourne Permablitzers currently spending a year volunteering on the Sabina Permaculture Project in Southern Uganda: "Uganda Permablitz #1 will be in Ssanje at the home of Mathias and Teddy on February 28th, to establish a vegetable growing area on their land that already boasts some bananas, coffee, chickens and cows.He is a subsistence farmer, with 4 kids, and the day will involve about 10 neighbours from the village, and hopefully a couple of teachers from Sabina.
In 1983 permaculture co-originator
David Holmgren responded to the tragic Ash Wednesday fires with a
project called The Flywire House.
After many years out of print,
Holmgren Design Services has now fast tracked the planned reissue of
the Flywire House as an eBook.
As a contribution to the rebuilding of devastated communities, Holmgren Design Services have decided to make Flywire House available as a free download.
EAT THE SUBURBS takes the oil debate from the bowser to the backyard
and follows Melbourne’s “permablitzers” as they prepare for the end of
the oil age… one garden at a time.
It has been one hell of a couple of weeks. Our condolences to all who
have suffered from the fires. With the devastating heat seemingly past, it seems time to rebuild and
regrow for us all. There's nothing that says new life like a
seedling. Well maybe an actual golden phoenix would be better. But a
carrot is plenty cool too... Welcome to a permablitz
newsletter, our first for 2009. With lots of amazing stuff in it.

Welcome to Permablitz Melbourne - this site has been set up to help people get together and have fun learning about, designing and implementing suburban permaculture systems. Our focus is edible gardens, and our ultimate aim is to make the suburbs edible enough such that should food become unaffordable, we don’t even notice. See above for the next permablitz and feel free to submit your own onto the calendar. Check out photos of blitzes 1-6 here, and photos of more recent blitzes in our gallery.
